Brief Report on The Meeting with German President Joachim Gauck by Tada Taniguchi

Below is an account of the occasion I was provided to meet German President Joachim Gauck and other dignitaries as a result of my commitments with our Max Planck Center. A welcome dinner was held on November 14th in President Gauck’s honor, hosted by Japan’s Prime Minister at his residence.

First, I had the pleasure of being seated next to Professor Helmut Schwarz, President of Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Professor Schwarz and I discussed at length about the importance of fostering basic research. Prof. Schwarz kindly introduced me to President Gauck and we talked about our Center, albeit rather briefly. President Gauck commented to me that he was very satisfied with our joint activity.

Following this, I met with Ambassador Takeshi Yagi at the Japanese Embassy in Berlin. He expressed his deep interest in our Center and kindly told me that he and his staff will do their best for the forthcoming symposium/reception in Berlin. I also met with Ambassador Dr. Hans Carl von Werthern of the German Embassy in Tokyo. When I explained to him about our common endeavor of the Center, he told me that he would be very happy to organize a reception when we will have the next year's symposium in Tokyo.

Overall, the reception was very enjoyable and productive in terms of forging so-called "science diplomacy" in the context of advancing the visibility and development of our Center.

Finally, I take this opportunity to thank our German colleagues for the strong support and cooperation.

     Tada
