Cryobiology and Cryotechnology
Journal Information and Manuscript Submission Rules
The Japanese Society for Cryobiology and Cryotechnology
1. Journal Information
Cryobiology and Cryotechnology is the official journal of the Japanese Society for Cryobiology and Cryotechnology and is published twice a year. The scope of the journal is basic and applied studies in low temperature, freezing and drying, using organisms and organism-related entities as study materials, as well as technologies in related science fields. Cryobiology and Cryotechnology consists of original papers, research reports and reviews, and other types of articles authorized by the Editorial Committee.
2. Manuscript Submission Rules
Manuscripts can be submitted for peer review for one of the three sections, Original Paper, Reports, or Reviews, each of which covers the following articles.
(1) Original Papers: unpublished papers that present an original and new finding in the fields that match the scope of the Society.
(2) Reports: brief reports of oral presentations made in an annual meeting of the Society or a seminar hosted by the Society.
(3) Reviews: summarized manuscripts of special lectures presented at an annual meeting of the Society or a seminar hosted by the Society. These are comprehensive reviews of research conducted by the presenter and other relevant studies.
At least one author of the submitted manuscript (either for Original Paper, Report, or Review) should be a member of the Society, unless the Editorial Committee authorizes. All manuscripts must follow the submission rules described below. Unless instructed otherwise, the manuscripts should be prepared using the template provided and submitted as an electronic file. Texts should be prepared as a Microsoft Word file (or in Rich Text Format) and figures should be prepared using Microsoft Excel or similar software, saved as a Microsoft PowerPoint file, and inserted into the manuscript. Tables should be prepared using Excel or Word software and inserted into the manuscript. The template can be downloaded from here.
Submission should be made by sending an email with the correspondence sheet and other necessary documents attached. (The Word or rich text file should be converted into a PDF file and sent in both forms.)
3. Manuscript Format
Original papers may be any length (preferably within 10 pages in print). Manuscripts for the Reports and Review sections should be within 4 pages in print, including figures, tables and all other information. When the total length (including figures and tables) exceeds the pages specified above in print in print, the author must pay for the printing of the excess pages (4,000 yen/page).
The manuscripts may be in Japanese or English. Original papers and research reports in Japanese should include the following items in the order described. No specific instruction is given for the manuscript for the Review Section.
(1) Title
(2) Names of the institutions the authors belong to
(3) Names of the authors
(4) Title in English
(5) Names of the authors in English (example: Tarou YAMADA)
(6) Names and locations of the institutions the authors belong to in English
(7) ABSTRACT in English
(8) Key words (maximum of 5 each in Japanese and English)
(9) INTRODUCTION
(10) MATERIALS AND METHODS
(11) RESULTS
(12) DISCUSSION
(13) ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
(14) REFERENCES
English manuscripts for original papers and reports should be prepared with items (4) to (14) in order above. The specified check sheet should be referred either in Japanese or English.
Academic terms used in Japanese manuscripts should be chosen based on the Gakujutsu Yogoshu (Academic Terms) published by the Ministry of Education, Japan. Abbreviations, symbols and signs can be used if they are commonly used globally and should be followed by full spelling in parentheses at first use (see example below). Alternatively, a list of abbreviations, symbols and signs should be given in the first page.
Example (when shown in text): AFP (Antifreeze Protein)
4. References
The references should be indicated in the text using citation-sequence numbers and an ending parenthesis in superscript (i.e., 1), 1,2), 1-4)). References should consist of the title of the article, name of the journal, volume number, and first and last page (connected with a hyphen), followed by published year in parentheses, in order. The abbreviation of journals should be referred to each journal. Books (both in Japanese and English) should be cited as follows. Name of the author: title of the section or chapter (if any), title of the book, name of the editor, name of the publisher, place of publication, page (year of publication).
Example (the sequence number of the references is in order of appearance in paper):
- Kamata, T. and Uemura, M.: Solute accumulation in wheat seedlings during cold acclimation: contribution to increased freezing tolerance, CryoLetters, 25, 311-322 (2004)
- Mazur, P. : Principles of cryobiology, In "Life in the Frozen State", B. Fuller, N. Lane, E.E. Benson, eds., CRC Press, London,p.3-65 (2004)
5. Figures and Tables
Figures (including photos) and tables are listed with a sequence number (e.g., Table 1, Table 2, Fig. 1, Fig. 2) along with a label and caption (limit the length to minimum). The label and caption should be in English. Figures and photos should be electronically prepared and inserted into the text. Alternatively, figures and photos can be separately prepared in a form of electronic file (e.g., PowerPoint). In this case, the pages of figure/photo file should be numbered consecutively from the last page of the text file. In the figure/photo file, only one figure/photo should be placed in one page. The place where the figure/photo should be inserted must be indicated in the text. The author may request the journal’s Editorial Office for preparation and editing of figures, tables and photos (with fee). The figures, tables, and photos can be printed in color by request from the author (with fee). When the author uses a figure, photo, or table that has already published by another publisher, the author should obtain agreement from the author and publisher of the original publication.
6. Reviewing Procedure
Submission: Original papers can be submitted any time. Research reports should be submitted within 2 weeks from the last day of the annual meeting. Reviews should be submitted within 1 month after the lecture. The author will be noticed when the submission is received.
Review (reviewers and reviewing period): The reviewing period is 3 weeks for original papers, research reports, and reviews. The Editorial Committee shall decide on a handling editor for each submission, who will choose 2 reviewers. The reviewers shall notify the handling editor of their decisions (accepted, re-review after revision, or rejected) with supporting comments. When the decisions of the two reviewers are divided, the handling editor shall designate another review.
When the final decision requires re-reviewing of the manuscript, the handling editor shall notify the author of the comments by the reviewers and request the response and revision. If the author does not reply to the reviewing results within 1 month, the manuscript shall be treated as withdrawn (the manuscript must be newly submitted, if desired). After repeating corresponding and reviewing, the final result (accepted or rejected) shall be reported to the Editor-in-Chief. The Editor-in-Chief shall send an acceptance letter or reasons for rejection to the author.
The manuscripts shall not be returned. The Society shall retain copyright of accepted manuscripts and articles.
7. Proofreading
Proofreading by the author shall be made only for the first draft. No addition may be allowed to the draft. The Editorial Committee or the printer may modify the draft for layout purposes.
8. Reprints
Reprints of the articles may be ordered (minimum of 50 copies) with a cost of 7,000 yen for 2 pages, 9,000 yen for 4 pages, 10,000 yen for 6 pages, 11,000 yen for 8 pages, and 12,000 yen for 10 pages for 50 copies. Additional copies of reprints may be purchased with 5,000 yen/50 copies. The author may request the reprints by indicating the number of copies wanted in the reprint order form. The total costs billed to the author include the costs for the reprints and the extra pages, if any.
9. Submission and Inquiry
The submission of manuscripts and inquiry about the submission should be sent to:
