Overview
The Japanese Brain Bank Network for Neuroscience Research has been built and is being operated (with MEXT's Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas). An eligible facility must meet the following three essential requirements: providing open resources; having a brain bank donor registration system; and conducting quality control of its resources and being able to provide them to researchers. We support the provision of postmortem brain resources.
Content of Support
Support for constructing brain resources
Through cooperation between brain banks supported by MEXT's Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas-Platform for Advanced Technologies and Research Resources, the Japanese Brain Bank Network for Neuroscience Research (JBBNNR) has been built. The three essential requirements are that an eligible facility: 1) provides open resources; 2) has a brain bank donor registration system; and 3) conducts quality control of its resources, including neuropathological diagnosis, and can provide them to researchers. The JBBNNR provides support for autopsy and pathological searches across Japan at the request of registered donors, develops resources, and nurtures successors.
Support for utilizing brain resources
We provide support for the provision of postmortem brains and spinal cord resources. In these support activities, we share neuropathological diagnostic data generated in Japan, which is internationally recognized as top-level. We also accumulate high-quality postmortem brain and spinal cord resources that meet the U.S. NIH's standards for brain bank resources for storage, management, and operation, we are under the guidance of the Brain Bank Committee of the Japanese Society of Neuropathology. Our resources are characterized by a large number of normal controls in addition to diseased brains and by the additional resources based on full-body autopsies. We believe that it is our mission to support the foundation of Japan's neuroscience research by determining, through online consultation, the optimal resources to be provided to studies conducted by applicant researchers.
Other Information
Requests for consultation and applications are always welcome. Requests for consultation on non-brain peripheral tissues are also welcome. We also provide consultation regarding the research period.
