Requirements for enrolling in the GPLLI course

To be eligible to enroll in the GPLLI course, graduate students must either be enrolled in a Master's program or a 4-year Doctoral program, or be provisionally accepted into the post-Master's portion of a Doctoral program or a 4-year Doctoral program in one of the following fields:

Graduate School of Medicine:

Molecular and Cellular Biology; Functional Biology; Pathology, Immunology and Microbiology; Radiology and Biomedical Engineering; Neuroscience; Social Medicine; Internal Medicine; Surgical Sciences; Reproductive, Developmental and Aging Sciences

Graduate School of Engineering:

Bioengineering; Materials Engineering; Chemistry and Biotechnology; Chemical System Engineering; Applied Chemistry; Electrical Engineering and Information Systems; Mechanical Engineering; Precision Engineering; Nuclear Engineering and Management; Applied Physics

Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences:

Pharmaceutical Sciences; Pharmacy

Graduate School of Science:

Biological Sciences

In addition, candidates must meet all of the criteria listed below:

  1. Candidates must intend to obtain a doctorate in a basic or applied field relating to cutting-edge medical development systems.
  2. Candidates must have an interest in the relationship between science and society, and between science and industry, and must be willing to make a proactive effort to study these interactions.
  3. Candidates must have the ambition to become a leader in life innovation.
  4. Candidates must have a thorough understanding of the goal of the GPLLI course, and of the requirements for completion, etc.
  5. Candidates must have the intention to either continue on from a Master’s degree to take a Doctorate, or to enroll in a 4-year Doctoral program, in one of the Departments listed above.*
  6. Candidates must apply for a Doctoral Course Students (DC) fellowship provided by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and must be able to maintain their enrollment on the GPLLI course after acceptance.
  7. Candidates must consent that their Ph.D. diploma will note that they completed the GPLLI course.

* Students who are planning to get a job in a business enterprise after completing their Master’s degree are not eligible to enroll in the GPLLI course.
