Our society needs leaders of tomorrow who will take the initiative to improve society, and the QOL of our people, with high expectations to make a difference, and an attitude not to be denied. The University of Tokyo is committed on many fronts to nurture and develop great leaders. “The Graduate Program for Leaders in Life Innovation” is one such initiative. The principles of this program are to establish an integrated academic framework to create an advanced medical development system, and, at the same time, develop international leaders who can lead the way to life innovation through the guidance of a diverse faculty, in a cutting-edge research environment. Under these principles, the program provides not only a clear research agenda, but also a well-conceived leadership development path.

It is inevitable that students need to develop by learning from others with different perspectives, in order to gain insights into the true context of life sciences research, and thus tangibly exploit new fields of study. We believe students, with such stimuli, can be inspired to innovate to new heights. As a foundation, this program aims to develop leaders who have a technological foundation of their own specialty, but with holistic perspectives as to the challenges and opportunities that society today presents. A key element is our focus on their global communication skills (English language ability is just a cost of entry), to ensure they have the ability to connect and inspire others to achieve common goals. With such leadership qualities, we believe they can initiate substantial advances in medical development and healthcare innovation, globally.
