What's GPLLI?

This program was developed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's project, "The Program for Leading Graduate Schools," and was established in 2011. The project was designed for the purpose of guiding outstanding students to be globally active leaders in industry, academia and government, with wide vision and creativity. The program thus aims to reform graduate school education to provide qualified doctoral degree program of global level, not entangled in industry, academia and government only.

The University of Tokyo's "Graduate Program for Leaders in Life Innovation (GPLLI)" integrates a globally outstanding education and research resources on life innovation, and educates students to develop leadership in diverse and complex aspects - from basic to clinical application, and from medication to medical devices - which support life innovation. The advanced medical system is complex, thus, a multidisciplinary knowledge base and a complex set of abilities called "leadership" (solid basis in specialty, broad perspectives, communication skills and deep insight) are required of leaders to integrate other people. This program develops multidisciplinary degree programs, including the cooperation of medical, engineering, pharmaceutical sciences and science disciplines, in preparation for the establishment of a global advanced medical system, and educates potential global leaders to meet demand characteristics described above.
