Arachidonate metabolites (prostaglandins, leukotrienes), phospholipid derivatives (platelet-activating factor, lysophosphatidic acid), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and lipid-soluble vitamins are bioactive compounds, collectively termed "lipid mediators". These compounds play important roles in self-defense mechanisms and neuronal functions, working in concert with cytokines, neurotransmitters, and hormones. We are currently studying the metabolism and functions of these lipid mediators using strategies of biochemistry, recombinant genetic engineering and mutant mice technologies.
