The Japan Society for Occupational Health
Our committee was founded in 2006 as a scientific committee in the Japan Society for Occupational Health. In 2004, the 6th International ICOH conference on occupational health for health care workers took place in Kitakyushu, Japan. It has promoted practice and research within this field in Japan. Dr. Susumu Oda, the chair of the 6th conference, became the chair of our scientific committee.
Members consisted of physicians, nurses and hygienists working in health care facilities. The meeting takes place twice every year. At the first meeting in May 2006, we prioritized action areas in Japan in the following order; (1) overwork, (2) stress, (3) establishing an organization for occupational health in hospitals, and (4) needlestick injury. The second meeting was held in October 2006 to establish the Asian networks under the chair of Dr. Toru Yoshikawa.

The third meeting is going to take place in May 2007 to discuss violence in heath care facilities.
We have a mailing list that has generated significant interest as indicated by the over 70 members who have joined as of December 2006. Among members of the committee, some were involved in publishing “a guidebook for occupational health at hospitals (in Japanese)” edited by Aizawa Y, Wada K.
