Precision medicine in sepsis

Short Biography

Tom van der Poll is Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine in the Amsterdam University Medical Center (University of Amsterdam). Van der Poll is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. His research focuses on pneumonia and sepsis, particularly on pathogenesis, the host response, immunotherapy and biomarkers. He published >1000 articles on this topic. He is the former chair of the International Sepsis Forum, and was a member of international committee that established the new sepsis definitions (JAMA 2016). He was elected as member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2019 and as member of Academia Europaea in 2023.

The microbiome in sepsis: from pathogenesis towards novel treatment strategies

Short Biography

W. Joost Wiersinga, MD, PhD, MBA, is Professor of Medicine and chair of the Infectious Diseases Division at Amsterdam UMC. Trained at the University of Amsterdam with additional experience at the Mayo Clinic and NIH, he combines clinical work with education and research. At the Center for Infection Molecular Medicine, he studies host responses to severe infections—sepsis, pneumonia (including COVID-19), and melioidosis—with a strong focus on the gut microbiome.

He leads multicenter studies on pneumonia and sepsis, emphasizing biomarker development and treatment evaluation, and has published in leading journals such as JAMA, BMJ, Immunity, and NEJM. His honors include the Andreas Bonn medallion, the ESCMID Young Investigator Award, and the ANZICS Global Rising Star Award.

Wiersinga has chaired national and international sepsis and antibiotic-treatment guideline groups and serves on both the International Sepsis Forum council and the European Sepsis Alliance. He has received major ZonMw (Veni, Vidi, Vici) and EU funding, including leadership of the H2020 European Sepsis Academy.
