このたび、第49回日本顔面神経学会を、令和8年6月18日（木）・19日（金）の2日間、神奈川県横浜市の横浜市開港記念会館にて開催いたします。顔面神経麻痺に対する再建術に真摯に取り組んでまいりました私にとりまして、誠に光栄なことであり、この機会をお与えくださいました本学会の役員ならびに会員の皆さまに、心より御礼申し上げます。
横浜は、日本が世界に向けて扉を開いた「近代日本の玄関口」として、その歩みと発展を大きく支えてきました。開港の地として新たな文化・技術・学問を果敢に受け入れる挑戦と共創の精神は、今もなお街の空気に息づいております。開港50周年を記念して建てられた横浜市開港記念会館は、その象徴として長い年月を刻んでまいりました。
顔面神経麻痺の診療においては、AI 技術を取り入れた新たな評価ツールの開発や、不完全治癒例・病的共同運動（synkinesis）などの後遺症に対する外科的治療など、最前線の取り組みが今なお着実に進んでおります。形態のみならず心からの自然な笑顔の回復を目指し、本学問は次のステージへと歩を進めています。
こうした背景を踏まえ、今回のテーマを「心からの笑顔を 開かれた未来に」といたしました。笑顔は人の社会生活や尊厳に大きな影響を与え、SNS 全盛の現代においてその重要性はいっそう高まっています。顔面神経麻痺の診療は、表情筋と神経の複雑な構造も相まって、いまだ解決しきれない様々な病態や課題が残されていますが、自然な笑い（spontaneous smile）の実現へ向けた探究こそが、心からの笑顔へ通じる鍵だと考えております。また「開かれた」という言葉には、新しい学問や技術のみならず、多様な分野や地域から新たな人材を広く受け入れていきたいという思いを込め、国際性豊かな学術集会を目指しました。
そうした想いに応えて下さる様に、韓国から例年ご参加下さるHak Chang先生、Tae Suk Oh先生、Jin Kim先生といった先生方に加え、非常に多くの韓国人医師ならびにコメディカルの方々も御参加いただけることになり、日韓シンポジウムにとどまらず、一般演題でも様々なご発表を頂く予定になっています。
さらに、アメリカから UT Southwestern 大学教授のShai Rozen 先生、フランスからDaniel Labbé先生をお招きし、特別講演のみならず、ミシガン大学教授のAlison Snyder-Warwick先生、ニューヨークのJohnny Lu先生らのオンライン講演も交えた、学会初の国際シンポジウムを企画し、本学会最大のハイライトとしました。AIによる同時翻訳システムも取り入れており、韓国の先生方も含め、世界に開かれた学会になればと願っております。
教育講演では、笑顔の末梢及び中枢神経における仕組みについて、吉岡伸高先生並びに亀山茂樹先生より、解剖学的知見を交えて御講演頂く予定です。また、患者さんのQOL向上に有用と考えられるメイクアップケアについて、青木和香恵様並びに勝見さち代先生にご教示頂く予定にしております。
本学会は耳鼻咽喉科、形成外科、脳神経外科、リハビリテーション科、麻酔科など多様な診療科に加え、理学療法士や鍼灸師といったコメディカルの方々が学際的に集う場でもあります。各領域の視点から多方面に議論を深められるよう、テーマごとにシンポジウムならびにパネルディスカッションを企画しました。更に、もう一つの新たな試みとして、各分野の術式や手技を分かりやすくオープンな形で深められるよう、ショート動画セッションを企画し、アワードセッションとして、本学会のハイライトの一つに位置づけました。
一般演題には、ショート動画も含め100演題を超えるご登録を頂き、過去最大の演題登録数を記録しています。多くの先生方ならびに関係者の皆様のご厚意とご協力に、心より感謝申し上げます。
なお、本学会は、秋田大学耳鼻咽喉科 主任教授・山田武千代 先生が主催される第35回日本聴神経腫瘍研究会との合同開催です。両学会の会員の皆様にとって、広く開かれた相互交流の場になることを願っております。
会場は交通至便で、横浜港や中華街にもほど近い立地です。学会の合間には、ご家族やご友人とともに、横浜の街で思い出に残るひとときをお過ごしいただければ幸いです。
心からの笑顔の未来に向けて、皆様にとって有意義な時間となる様、鋭意準備を進めております。多くの皆様のご参加を、心よりお待ち申し上げております。

It is my great honor to announce that the 49th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Facial Nerve Research will be held over two days on Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Yokohama City Port Opening Memorial Hall in Kanagawa Prefecture. As someone who has earnestly dedicated myself to reconstructive surgery for facial nerve palsy, it is a tremendous privilege to serve as the President. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the board members and all the members of the Society for giving me this opportunity.
Yokohama has greatly supported the progress and development of Japan as the "gateway to modern Japan," where the country opened its doors to the world. The spirit of challenge and co-creation—boldly embracing new cultures, technologies, and academic disciplines as a pioneer port city—still lives on in the atmosphere of the city today. The Yokohama City Port Opening Memorial Hall, built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the port's opening, has stood for many years as a symbol of this spirit.
In the field of facial nerve palsy, leading-edge efforts continue to advance steadily, including the development of new evaluation tools incorporating AI technology and surgical treatments for sequelae such as incomplete recovery and pathological synkinesis. Aiming not only for morphological restoration but also for the recovery of a natural smile from the heart, this field is now moving toward its next stage.
With this background in mind, we have chosen the theme of this meeting: "A Heartfelt Smile for an Open Future." A smile has a profound impact on human social life and dignity, and its importance is becoming even greater in today’s era of social media. In the treatment of facial nerve palsy, many conditions and challenges remain unresolved, partly because of the complex anatomy and function of the facial muscles and nerves. Nevertheless, I believe that the pursuit of a natural, spontaneous smile is the key to restoring a truly heartfelt smile. The word "open" in our theme also reflects our wish to welcome not only new academic knowledge and technologies, but also new talents from diverse fields and regions. With this aspiration, we have aimed to create an international and open academic meeting.
At this meeting, in addition to Dr. Hak Chang, Dr. Tae Suk Oh, and Dr. Jin Kim, who participate from South Korea every year, we will be joined by many Korean physicians and medical staff. We anticipate various presentations from them, not only in the Japan-Korea Symposium but also in the general sessions.
Furthermore, we are honored to invite Professor Shai Rozen from UT Southwestern Medical Center in the United States and Professor Daniel Labbé from France for special lectures. In addition, online lectures by Professor Alison Snyder-Warwick from the University of Michigan and Dr. Johnny Lu from New York will be included in our first-ever International Symposium. This symposium will be one of the major highlights of the meeting. By incorporating an AI-based simultaneous translation system, we hope to make this meeting open to the world, including our colleagues from Korea and other countries.
In the educational lectures, Dr. Nobutaka Yoshioka and Dr. Shigeki Kameyama will discuss the mechanisms of smiling in the peripheral and central nervous systems, including anatomical perspectives. In addition, Ms. Wakae Aoki and Dr. Sachiyo Katsumi will provide insights into makeup care, which is considered useful for improving patients’ quality of life.
This society serves as an interdisciplinary forum where professionals from diverse clinical departments—including otolaryngology, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, rehabilitation, and anesthesiology—gather alongside medical staff such as physical therapists and acupuncturists. To deepen discussions across multiple aspects of each domain, we have planned thematic symposia and panel discussions. Furthermore, as a new initiative to openly and clearly explore the surgical procedures and techniques of each field, we have organized a Short Video Session. Positioned as an Award Session, this will serve as another major highlight of the meeting.
We have received over 100 abstract submissions for the general sessions, including short videos, recording the highest number of submissions in our history. I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the goodwill and cooperation of all the doctors and stakeholders involved.
Furthermore, this meeting is held jointly with the 35th Annual Meeting of the Japan Acoustic Neuroma Society, chaired by Professor Takechiyo Yamada, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Akita University. I hope this will serve as a widely open platform for mutual exchange among the members of both societies.
The venue is highly accessible and conveniently located near the Port of Yokohama and Yokohama Chinatown. Between academic sessions, I hope you will spend memorable moments in the city of Yokohama with your family and friends.
Toward the future of heartfelt smiles, we are making every effort to prepare a meaningful and fruitful meeting for all participants. I sincerely look forward to welcoming many of you to Yokohama.
