Reports on p-drug workshop, Tokyo, Japan (9-11/08/2000)

ISMAIL Shaiful Bahari bin, School of Medical Sciences, University Sains Malaysia

First of all, let me introduce myself again. My name is Dr. Shaiful Bahari Ismail. I am from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, and situated North-East of Peninsula Malaysia about 525kms from Kuala Lumpur, capital city of Malaysia. I am working as a lecturer in Family Medicine Unit, School of Medical Sciences, University Science Malaysia for the past one and half years. My work involving teaching undergraduates and postgraduates students, doing research as well as seeing patients about 2 days per week at the outpatient clinic.

I was asked by Assoc.Prof Dr. Rahman Noor to attend the workshop and knowing the golden opportunity, I straightaway give my agreement. The reasons why I was delighted to attend the workshop are because: 1. The rational pharmacotherapy is a new area to me and even though I teach undergraduate students on rational prescribing, I myself never had formal training in the topics. 2. I wanted to go and see myself how Japanese people work and of course see the country myself and I am not disappointed because Japan is so beautiful/colourful and so modern. Even though I have been to most part of the world, but Japan always fascinate me. It is like a dream comes through when I touch my foot in Japan. The whole journey was smooth, from the flight to Narita till comes back to Kuala Lumpur.

The whole course was well organized. The food was marvelous, especially during the farewell party. The place was superb. The people were great. In fact I have met a bundle of people who are not only hard working, but they also nice and humble to the extend that I feel bad about myself for not up to their standard. Regarding the program of P-drug, I have learned a lot about the technique in teaching rational prescribing and at the moment, I am using the same technique to teach my undergraduate students. I have tried one session for the postgraduates but it may need some alternation to suit them as well. The materials that were given are adequate and clear. The sessions, even though it was good but I wish that the sessions are longer and more topics for discussion.

If you ask me, what more to improve for the next workshop, I would say, just make it longer, probably 1 full week so that more topics/example can be discussed. My next plan is for Malaysia to have our own regular workshop on rational pharmacotherapy, at least 2 yearly to improve knowledge and skills among the medical professional here.
