“Women in Physiology of Japan: WPJ” was established during the annual Japanese Physiological Society meeting held in Nagoya in 1995.
The aim of WPJ is to enhance interactions between its members and improve the research environment for women physiologists in Japan.
The activities of WPJ include: 1) Biannual publication of “NEWS LETTER”, 2) Group lunch/dinner during the annual meeting of the Japanese Physiological Society, 3) E-mail distribution of information including symposia and seminars concerning the promotion of gender equality and work-life balance, grants-in-aid for women and/or young scientists, new support systems for child-bearing and –rearing researchers. 4) Workshops – introduction of members, discussions about research themes of the members and guest speakers, how to make lectures and practical classes interesting, how to balance work and family, etc. 5) Surveys on academic research environment, carrier paths, and life-style of female scientists.

- Obituary: Aya Irisawa - a trailblazing woman physiologist in Japan
Aya-sensei had been devoted to research in cardiac physiology with her husband, late Prof. Hiroshi Irisawa and encouraged many young women scientists over many years. N. Nishimaru, J. Kimura and M. Noda wrote their memories of her with thankfulness. (One of the IUPS symposia “Irisawa Memorial Symposium”, is named after the late Prof. H. Irisawa.)
