Carl von Linne's Uppsala

June 2002

Carl von Linne is, probably one of the most known historical Swedish scientists in the world for the classification of plants, together with Celsius for the degree of temperature and Ångström for the unit of atomic size. All three scientists were working at Uppsala, an old university town 100 km north to Stockholm.

A university building named Gustavianum dating back to 18th century still remains in the center of Uppsala, next to Uppsala Cathedral. This building is now open to public as a museum exhibiting the history of scientific activity in Uppsala. On the top flour, there is the famous Anatomical Theater, but you can't miss the thermometer by Celsius which has opposite scaling with 100 degree at freezing point of water and 0 degree at its boiling point.

The Anatomical Theater is located under the unique dome at the top flour.

The canal and the cathedral.

Most impressive for me was the Linne's botanical garden restored to his days. The botanical garden is devided into several sectors, such as the garden of spring flowers, of autumn flowers, of biennial plants, of aquatic plants, and etc.

According to the explanation, it takes huge effort to maintain these plants.

Salamander and aquatic insects can be found in the pond.

An orchid with Swedish nameGuckusko (Cypripedium calceolus).
