Stora Karso

Stora Karsö (Great Karl's Island) is a small island located west to Gotland and is known for its large colony of sea birds. It takes 30 minuets by boat from Klintehamn, Gotland to reach Stora Karsö. There is a small museum and an overnight facility on the island. It is possible to make a day trip from Gotland with a guided tour on the island, but spending a night on this island is a special experience. After the departure of the last boat, you will feel really isolated. The water is crystal clean, the white lime stone cliff is shining under the sun, and you may be able to occupy the pebbled beach for your own. Actually, I felt as if I were in a Mediterranean island. Surprisingly, the only restaurant on the island serves a really nice food! I also have to note that the entire island is a nature reserve and all the visitors should respect the regulation there.

The lighthouse, which is now used as a guest house, is also a home for numerous swallows nesting in the roof.

Guillemot (Latin: Uria aalge, Swedish: Sillgrissla)

Please also watch QuickTime movie of the birds on the island.
