No. 29 Farewell to Post Office
2002/06/16
Now, people in Sweden are saying goodbye to their familiar post
office in their neighbour. Posten (The Swedish Post) is closing down
almost all the post offices everywhere in this country. Strictly
speaking, the "new" post office only handle banking service and
business letters, and now you have to go to gas stands or
supermarkets instead. For me, it is hard to understand why crowded
post offices in the urban area need to be shut down, however
according to Posten's propaganda, it is offering more convinient
service with longer opnening hours. So far, I have heard a lot of
complaints with regards to the confusion caused by this reformation
that stuffs at gas stands and supermarkets are not enough knowledged
to handle various kind of postal service, and that looks like a
natural consequence. It's true that the historical role of classical
mailing system is fading out by the emerge of other measure of
communications such as telephone, fax and e-mail. Nevertheless, only
time will be able to prove whether this reformation was a right one
or not....
A post office which used to be like.
Now, the ordinary postal service are taken over by gas stands and supermarkets.
Newly designed post boxes as the symbol for new "Posten", still with little functional difference from the old ones.
