Passport and Visa

All foreign residents entering Japan must have a valid passport. A participant requiring a visa should apply to a Japanese consular office or diplomatic mission in his/her country prior to departure.

Visa applications need to be made at least three months before the symposium. Participants are advised to contact their local travel agents or air carriers for details.

Climate and Clothing

The climate in Hakone in November is generally fine, the average temperature being between 3-14°C (37-57°F). It is recommended that you bring a warm coat.

Currency

Foreign currency or traveler's checks can be changed into Japanese yen at major banks, hotels, and airports (One US dollar = 130 yen as of April 2002). Banks are open from 9:00 - 15:00 from Monday to Friday. Participants are advised to change currency at airports, as the number of banks in Hakone is limited.

Credit Cards

Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Diners Club are widely accepted at hotels, department stores, shops, restaurants, and nightclubs.

Tipping

There is no custom of individual tipping anywhere in Japan, even at hotels and restaurants. Tips are usually included in the bill as a service charge, when required.

Electrical Appliances

The voltage in Japan is 100 - 110 volts for electrical appliances. The frequency is 50Hz in Tokyo, Hakone, and other parts of eastern Japan (60Hz in western parts of Japan). Electrical sockets usually accept only two-pronged (vertical) plugs.
