Neurologic manifestations: Of some 500 patients with COVID-19 admitted to a Chicago-area health system, 42% had neurologic manifestations at illness onset, 63% at hospital admission, and 82% at any time during their illness, according to a study in the Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. These manifestations most often entailed myalgias, headaches, encephalopathy, dizziness, dysgeusia, and anosmia. Encephalopathy in particular was more common in severe than non-severe COVID-19 (84% vs. 13% of patients). After multivariable adjustment, younger patients and those with severe disease were more likely to develop any neurologic symptom, while older patients were more likely to develop encephalopathy. Encephalopathy was an independent predictor of worse functional outcome and mortality within 30 days after hospitalization.
